If you’ve always been curious about what it’s like to work on the production side of a winery, now is the perfect time to get started. With harvest season just around the corner, Star Staffing is looking for cellar workers willing to work over the harvest season. This job is perfect for anyone looking for a short stint with a seasonal job, or someone looking to break into the wine industry.

As a cellar worker, your duties will include:

  • Cleaning cellar equipment
  • Weighing and sorting grapes
  • Performing daily pump-overs during the fermentation process
  • Filling barrels
  • Organizing the cellar

As for qualifications, here are some qualities and skills that will make you highly desirable:

  • Reliable
  • Strong work ethic
  • Strong English communication skills
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. of goods
  • Work standing on concrete surfaces for extended periods of time
  • Willing to working flexible hours
  • Willing to shift and work overtime during peak harvest periods

Along the way, you’ll be trained to correctly handle a variety of winery materials and additives with proper safety procedures in mind.

Not for the Faint of Heart

Be forewarned, working in grape and wine production, especially during harvest season, often means working long hours of manual, even heavy labor. Although the job can be very rewarding, it requires grit and a strong work ethic to survive the harvest season. But if you do well, you make yourself more attractive to wine companies and vineyards looking to hire full-time workers. Additionally, many wineries have connections and would be happy to refer you to another label looking for harvest workers.

The long hours often also means lots of overtime, so make sure you understand your company’s policy and your paycheck reflects that. Many of our cellar workers love the fact that they work hard for a short season, but are then able to take time off.

Working in the wine industry also opens doors to working and traveling all over the world. Take your pick from the world’s most thriving wine regions, from California, Washington, and Oregon in the United States, to Chile, Uruguay, and Argentina in South America, and vineyards in South Africa, New Zealand, Europe, and Australia.
