While the job title might imply otherwise, a forklift operator isn’t simply someone who can operate a lift. If you’re hiring in the space, you know that there’s much more to it than that. You’re looking for someone who can perform the job safely, confidently, and efficiently in your environment, with your people and your products.
At Star Staffing, we take that responsibility seriously.
We created a specific, vetted recruiting process for forklift operator roles that’s designed to protect our clients’ operations, teams, and bottom lines — all while placing the right people faster.
We’ve found that the smallest details are often the most important in determining a good fit, and so we’re not afraid to get granular during our searches. Here’s what we look for when screening forklift applicants — a few might surprise you.
1. Proven (and Recent) Forklift Experience
Learning by doing is priceless in this line of work. When screening applicants, we look for at least two years of recent forklift operation experience. That’s step one, but we don’t stop there. Our recruiters also verify the specific lift type and brands each candidate has operated.
Setting these requirements offers significant benefits for our clients—reduced training and onboarding time, and fewer errors, which we know can be costly. When a candidate already has hands-on experience with the right equipment, it reduces unnecessary trial-and-error in those essential first weeks of placement.
2. Operational Details: Hours, Loads, and Lift Height
We always reach out to references when screening for forklift roles, and we know how to ask the right questions when we speak with them.
Not all forklift experience is created equal. That’s why we ask:
- How many hours per day did [Name] actually operate a forklift?
- What types of products did they handle?
- How high did they regularly stack materials?
This allows us to better place candidates based on their past experiences (load size, warehouse layout, etc.). We’ve found it reduces the risk of product damage. Another benefit: operators with experience in similar high-volume, high-stack environments have already mastered efficiency.
3. Safety Record and Driving History
Safety is non-negotiable. Star Staffing verifies that forklift candidates have the following:
- No forklift accidents within the past year
- A valid driver’s license
- Meet requirements for a clean, acceptable DMV report
Our goal is always to prevent floor-safety incidents and reduce your liability exposure so that you can feel confident in your day-to-day operations.
4. Self-Confidence in Tight, High-Stack Spaces
Forklift roles often involve narrow aisles, congested docks, and vertical storage. Not for the faint of heart. With this in mind, we confirm that candidates are comfortable working in environments that require: tight maneuvering through narrow aisles and high stacks. We also ask questions to test how aware candidates are of their surroundings at any given time.
These questions help us get a sense of how safely they move in busy warehouses, whether they’re capable of going with the flow of your unique business, and tell us the most important element of all: that your next hire can stay calm under pressure.
