You’ve been on the hunt for a new opportunity, and you’ve just received a job offer! Now what?
Here’s a step by step guide to responding to a job offer, including things to think about at every step.
-
Always Say Thank You.
First, be sure to thank the company for the offer and acknowledge that it has been received. You can let them know you will review it and get back to them within a few days, giving a deadline is helpful both for you and the employer. A few days to review the offer is completely normal.
Review the offer thoroughly. Make sure you understand what requirements are involved. If you are being asked to sign a non-compete agreement, a non-disclosure agreement, or other legally binding documents, educate yourself. Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification.
-
Negotiate – if needed.
Make sure you understand what the package entails. If it’s not what you expected or think is fair, it’s completely okay to negotiate. You never know unless you ask! Ultimately, you want to make sure the position and the salary are going to work for you. If you haven’t done any research on what the salary and benefits range for the position are, do your due diligence now. Glassdoor.com is a great place to start.
Don’t be afraid to negotiate up from the offer. Some companies low-ball in their initial offers, and some don’t. Don’t sell yourself short. It’s also okay for you to ask about specific elements of the benefits package. Often companies have some leeway in benefits, so if something is very important to you, ask about it.

Accept or Decline.
If you decide the job isn’t for you or you’ve received a better offer, decline as soon as you know. If you’re accepting, confirm the start date and ask for any other important details, like what normal work hours are and where to park. Make sure to ask about training periods, and whether there is a formal “trial” period in which both parties can decide if the fit is right.
In either instance, be sure to thank the company for the opportunity to work for them. They ultimately chose you and you should be proud, grateful and thankful! When you work with Star Staffing, we can help walk you through this process. Call us today to learn more about our services.
